underground8 Firewall-Appliance tested at Real-World Labs

Limes MF tested –
Performance is above the manufacturer's indications

Linz, November 23rd, 2007 – The Limes MF, firewall appliance from underground8, was tested by Real-World Labs in Stralsund - with a satisfying outcome: According to the examiners, the Limes has shown performance values which have in some areas even exceeded the underground8 product specifications. The UTM (Unified Threat Management)-appliance has remarkably proven its failure safety, quick rehabilitation after attacks and reliable recognition of attacks. The visitors at Interop 2007 in Berlin witnessed it live - the test results of the Limes MF were presented there in a "vitreous network" in front of specialists.

At the Real-World Labs the Limes MF was placed between client and server systems of Spirent and underwent performance and capacity tests. The tested models were the Limes MF 100, 150, 200 for a maximum number of users up to 20 power users. Step by step, the examiners went up to the load limit of the Limes. After this was attained, they commenced DoS (Denial of Service) and intrusion attacks. This should indicate whether the performance would decrease or the system would even fail due to the heavy load of the IDS (Intrusion Detection System) scanning functions of the firewall.
The Limes has shown to be more efficient than the underground8 specifications. When pushing it to the limit, the testers had to deploy more simulated connections than expected. Thus the transfer rate, response time and the maximum number of connections exceeded the manufacturer's data. At full load they initiated attacks intended to overload the system. In fact, the effect was that the data transfer rate diminished at around 10 to 20 percent; at no time did it fail. The performance losses were minimal for the connected clients, and the appliance proved its high stability under attack.

Limes „live“ in a vitreous network at the Interop in Berlin
The tests which have been run in a lab were presented live in cooperation with the Network Computing magazine at the international IT business fair Interop in front of experts.
Interested parties had the chance to convince themselves at the premises of the Limes' performance. Professor Dr. Bernhard G. Stütz, head of Real-World Labs in Stralsund said "The tests have shown that many of the indicated performance values in the underground8 data sheets can easily be revised upwards."

Günther Wiesauer, CEO of underground8, was pleased with the impressive test results. He stated "The implementation of best-of-breed solutions in high quality hardware and software was worthwhile: Our clients profit from the reserve capacity of the Limes. This means that our firewall is ready for the demands of current and future networks.

Austrian firewall manufacturer underground_8 builds effective anti-spam solution

Linz, October 17, 2007 – Not only are spam mails nasty – they cause financial losses and damage amounting to billions every year. Since they already constitute 90 per cent of all e-mail traffic, they eat up valuable resources like work time, bandwidth and storage capacity. Everyone is seeking for an easy to use effective defence against spam. Underground_8 reacted to these specific needs and has developed the Limes AS (anti-spam) Appliance. Thanks to a combination of hardware and software, in almost 100 per cent of all cases, spam doesn’t even arrive in the previously affected network.
The appliance is ready to use within a short time and doesn’t need any maintenance from IT professionals – underground_8 provides this for you with a special automated “Up2Date”-service. Thanks to this service, the Limes AS is frequently and automatically updated and dependably protects against more than 600,000 viruses, worms and trojans.

Stopping spam – Limes AS saves you money, time and frayed nerves

Linz, October 17, 2007 – underground8, producer of IT security appliances, announces the availability of their latest development, the Limes AS (anti spam) appliance. It helps maintain networks of all sizes to be almost one hundred  percent free from spam mails, viruses, worms and Trojans. It protects resources and enhances productivity. The appliance is quick and easy to install and commission, ready to use in minutes, easy to manage and always up-to-date thanks to frequent automatic updates.

Spam mails are damaging businesses and cost economies billions of money every year. They already constitute
almost ninety percent of all e-mail traffic and use up essential resources like work time, bandwidth and storage capacity – spam costs approximately 500 Euros per employee per year, says a recent study from Hamburg University. At worst, they assist with potentially successful phishing-attacks, contain viruses, worms and trojans or can create havoc and potential financial losses through fake sender addresses.

With the massive amount  of spam mails in individuals’ inboxes, valuable and legitimate mail can be lost or inadvertently deleted.

Preventive measures against spam often call for high investment. Installation and configuration of protective devices takes time, money and skill. However, it may still happen that some spam gets through to your inbox due to imperfect configuration, or important mails don’t arrive at their destination. Unprotected or poorly configured systems email communication loses a good deal of reliability and popularity.

Limes AS saves money and increases productivity

The Limes AS is ready to use within 30 minutes thanks to well designed plug and play software and filters your e-mail traffic at the intersection between the mail server and the network. The twelve layer filter system of the Limes AS detects spam mails with absolute accuracy in ninety eight percent of all cases, and with the lowest error rate. The signatures are updated frequently and automatically by underground_8 via the Up2Date service.

Limes AS can detect more than 600,000 viruses, worms, trojans and spyware thanks to multi layered scan and filtering mechanism and 2 independent anti-virus engines. Following installation it needs almost no administration. Detailed reporting and statistical functions are available through the well-structured GUI.

underground_8 presents a solution for effective bandwidth usage

underground_8 presents a solution for effective bandwidth usage
When your 2Mbit connection makes you feel like you're still using your dusty 56K modem, the problem is often not your bandwidth being too low, it isn't being used efficiently. The Limes Traffic Shaper (TS) can help organizations of all sizes.

When the Internet connection crawls at a snail's pace, people often try to solve the problem by increasing their bandwidth. However, the results tend not to be satisfactory.
“The problem is not the bandwidth, but rather inefficient use of the existing bandwidth. Based on statistical analysis, we were able to find that between 50 and 70% of Internet traffic in a business is coming from non-business services, such as Internet radio or P2P file sharing services. In a business that uses the Internet on a daily basis, this is not acceptable", said underground_8 CEO Gunther Wiesauer. The Limes TS appliance allows the prioritization of specific business services. Installing a Limes TS ensures that remote applications and services run without difficulty, and as quickly as possible. This is facilitated by means of underground_8's Traffic Shaping engine. This helps you block non-business traffic (P2P, Internet radio, Skype and youtube.com etc). The result is your bandwidth is freed up for business-related tasks alone. This increases productivity, efficiency and employee satisfaction - because after all, who likes to be kept waiting?
